So here you are at 68 years old. Hopefully you’ve lived an amazing life so far and are still living it to its fullest! You may have grown children and even grandchildren by now. You want to make sure they are not burdened when you one day pass. You’ve been putting it off. This is very common. You see commercials on TV for Colonial Penn and others advertising Guaranteed Acceptance Life Insurance. But upon further inspection, you realize getting burial insurance through Colonial Penn is a huge gamble to take for a 68 year old!
Better Burial Insurance Options for 68 Year Olds than Colonial Penn
Colonial Penn seems like a very credible company to most Americans. For goodness sake, Alex Trebek is their spokesperson! Many of us felt like Alex was right in our living rooms nightly as we watched Jeopardy!, imagining ourselves on the show & testing our own trivia knowledge. Alex Trebek is an iconic and beloved figure in this country and abroad.
But there are far better burial insurance options for 68 year olds than Colonial Penn. The companies we work with may not all hire famous celebrities, but they are no less credible than Colonial Penn. In fact, they are more credible.
So, It’s Natural than Many Americans Trust Colonial Penn
But what if I were to tell you that Colonial Penn, while they are a fine company, is over charging seniors for life insurance. Let’s just be blunt. Colonial Penn Life Insurance is far too expensive. For example, a 68 year old man in decent health will pay about $60 for $4,752 in final expense coverage. When you go with a company like Insurance for Final Expense, that same 68 year old man can spend that same $60 per month and qualify for $10,000. What is this Rate Lock that Colonial Penn Always Advertises?
Colonial Penn advertises a Rate Lock as though it was something that they (and only they) can offer to their customers as a benefit. But that is far from the case is that all whole life insurance policies with any company has a rate lock. It is standard in the industry.
There is another huge red flag when it comes to Colonial Penn Life Insurance. It’s called the 2 Year Waiting period. What does that mean? It means that if you have had recent serious health risks, companies like Colonial Penn alleviate their risk is to make you wait two years of YOUR payments before they will pay the FULL benefit. This way, the life insurance company collects 24 months worth of payments before your loves ones receive anything should you die.
Let’s say you are 68, and you go out and get a Colonial Penn Burial Insurance policy tomorrow. The policy has the dreaded 2 year waiting period attached. You have a wonderful 70th Birthday Party with family and friends. I remember my own Dad’s 70th B-day Party. It was great 🎂😊….
So You’re Pretty Confident that your Colonial Penn Burial Insurance Policy is Locked in Now, Right? WRONG!
Let’s hypothetically say that you have made 23 payments to good old Colonial Penn. You feel secure that should anything happen to you, your loved ones won’t be financially burdened. And then something tragic happens to your health and you pass. Your family gets nothing.

We Love Alex Trebek and are Praying his Your Full Recovery
I want to make sure that you know we have nothing against Alex Trebek. He is a great man who has led an incredible life and has had an amazing career. Alex has throughout his life, contributed philanthropically to many causes and organizations. He is undoubtedly loved by many.
On March 6, 2019, Trebek announced that he had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. He had been experiencing a persistent stomachache before the diagnosis but did not recognize it as a symptom of the disease. In a prepared video announcement of the diagnosis, Trebek noted that his prognosis was poor but that he would aggressively fight the cancer in hopes of beating the odds and would continue hosting Jeopardy! for as long as he was able.
On October 4, 2019, in an interview with CTV’s Chief Anchor and Senior Editor Lisa LaFlamme, Trebek said “I’m not afraid of dying,” and “I’ve lived a good life, a full life, and I’m nearing the end of that life … if it happens, why should I be afraid [of] that?”
When asked by Fox News what he would like his Legacy to be, Alex responded “He was a nice guy and that he was the best kind of quiz show host in that he always seemed to be rooting for the contestants,” Trebek began. “He wanted them to perform at their best because if they did, that would make the show a success and he would be able to enjoy the success of the program in that regard.”
I’m just guessing, but I don’t think Alex wants to be remembered as a spokesman for Colonial Penn.
Back to Burial Insurance. What is it Exactly?
First and foremost, burial insurance is a type of life insurance. To be very specific, its whole life insurance. Basically it’s a smaller whole life policy that is meant to provide the funds necessary to pay off all your final expenses. The idea is, the burial insurance plan pays for it all, so your family does not have to come out of their own pockets to do so. When its all said and done, the policy will pay cold hard cash directly to your family. They use those funds to pay off the funeral home. If there any money left over, it stays in your family.
You will frequently here various companies use the words “final expense” or “funeral insurance” in addition to “burial insurance”. They all mean the same thing, and in all honesty they are just marketing terms. They all refer to a smaller face vale whole life policy that has incredibly lax underwriting. Think of the words “attorney” and “lawyer”. They both mean the exact same thing. It’s just like that.
Burial insurance is quite unique in how its designed. There are some key elements to it that make it unlike most traditional life insurance policies. What is most important is to understand the difference at 68 years old between getting something like Colonial Penn Burial Insurance vs. getting it through an independent agency like us.
